Cruise Ship Legislation
Did you know that you have to sail to a foreign country before you can sail to a domestic port in the U.S. if you are on a cruise ship? That is, unless the cruise ship was built in the U.S., is registered in the U.S., owned and captained and crewed by U.S. citizens. Trouble is, there aren’t any U.S.-built cruise ships.
Blake Farenthold is trying to change this law, (section 27, the Jones Act, of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920). He is presenting legislation that will enable cruise ships to go from Brownsville/South Padre area to any U.S. port. Wouldn’t it be fun to stop at Corpus Christi, Galveston, New Orleans, or any of the Florida coastal towns all the way to the Florida Keys?
Head Economist for Stewart Title Speaks to WCR in Brownsville
Ted Jones, the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for Stewart Title was the speaker at the Women’s Council of Realtors luncheon in Brownsville yesterday. Sorry this picture is not the best but you can view all of this and more on Ted’s blog at http://blog.stewart.com. Ted says it is all about the jobs. We can’t make a recovery in our economy without them. He explained to all of us how fortunate we are to be doing business in Texas. Of course, he had MUCH more to say so check it out on his blog.
SPI Has New Coast Guard Commander
At a Chamber Coffee and Conversation Mixer yesterday morning, Lt. Joshua Sagers spoke to our group about the duties, jurisdiction, and history of our local Coast Guard. What an honor to have this young man in SPI. One of his goals is to expand the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Many of our waters are too shallow for them to navigate and they need the help of local citizens (especially with a shallow running boat) to aid in their rescue efforts. It was an interesting morning!
