Swift joins existing likenesses of Willie Nelson and Elon Musk in gallery

Spring is here, but it’s clear it won’t be a “cruel summer” as one coastal city is using its “salt air” to transform one pop star into an underwater beauty. An artist gave South Padre Island Swifties something they never needed more with his sculpture, turning Taylor Swift into a mermaid.
The Taylor Swift mermaid that wraps around a sandy throne is the latest sculpture to be added to . The village serves as a little gallery on the coast, constantly changing its display of museum-quality sculptures in a variety of styles and subjects.
Taylor’s piece was swiftly created in a week by Canadian sand sculptor Abe Waterman during spring break. The singer and songwriter mermaid joins existing likenesses of Willie Nelson and Elon Musk in the gallery.
Waterman has made massive contributions to the village over the years, “instrumental in not only carving amazing sculptures but in helping [the nonprofit] work out infrastructure challenges,” Lucinda Wierenga with nonprofit Sandcastle Island Inc. said.
Wierenga says the current version of the gallery represents the work of an international crew of some 12 sculptors, three of which are local. All sculptors, just like Waterman, are brought to South Padre Island through donations. Paul and Remy Hoggar, from Bulgaria, will carve the next sculpture in April, according to the website.
Visitors can take a picture with the now-sea star at the Holiday Sandcastle Village of South Padre on West Ling Street under the Ferris Wheel at Gravity Park.
