The Texas Transportation Commission added State Highway 104 to the state highway system. That opens up the door to additional funding sources needed to speed up the development of the second causeway, according to TxDOT.
Cameron County and the TxDOT Pharr District requested the designation and believe a second causeway would be beneficial for hurricane evacuations and emergency operations.
Officials said the new bridge and roadway will be built between FM 106 and Park Road 100 on South Padre Island. For now, the county and its partners will continue working on the environmental phase. They hope to be done with that no later than 2026.
