The city of South Padre Island, the city of Los Fresnos, and the Los Fresnos School District are joining forces to build a hurricane shelter that will double as a school gym. A FEMA grant will pay $1.8 million of the $2.4 million project to build a 20,000 sq. ft. “safe room” at Los Fresnos United 9th grade campus. Both cities will each fund $150,000 of the project while the school district will pay $300,000. The facility will withstand 200 mph winds and house up to 3,200 people. The shelter will also feature a command center with a radio system and a hurricane tracking equipment. What a great asset for our communities!
