My name is _____________ and I am pleased to submit this letter in support of the
proposal to construct a new South Padre Island 2nd Access, a project that has been in the
planning stages for many years and is critical to the long term economic vitality of our
South Texas region.
In the early morning hours of September 15, 2001, a barge struck the Queen Isabella
Causeway tragically ending the lives of several residents. This tragedy simultaneously
paralyzed the entire Laguna Madre area, first by stranding many visitors on the island for
days and secondly by damaging the economic lifeline to the entire area. It was a trying
time for many families, businesses and local governments.
More than ten years later, South Padre Island, Port Isabel and the entire Laguna Madre
area is thriving. Millions of visitors flock to this part of deep South Texas throughout
the year. There are winter Texans, spring breakers, Mexican nationals, locals and many
others that come for rest and relaxation. Because of the amounts of people coming to
the area, the traffic and congestion has increased dramatically and on busy weekends
and holidays one can spend hours upon hours to get on and off the island. It is truly an
emergency response and public safety concern which has made this infrastructure project
critically important to support the future economic growth on the mainland and the
island.
South Padre Island if planned accordingly has the ability to double and triple in size
over the next twenty to thirty years. Comparably the Laguna Madre area and North-
Eastern Cameron County also will see sizeable growth. A connection to the northern
end of the island will undoubtedly benefit the community in many ways. A project of
this magnitude will help stimulate the economy and provide short term and long term
sustainable jobs for the local residents in our region.
Finally, there can be no dispute that South Padre Island is the jewel of South Texas. It has
become a world-wide destination for many and it will continue to grow and prosper if we
improve the transportation infrastructure in the area. The South Padre Island 2nd Access
will improve economic development, increase tourism and make the trip for many much
safer and enjoyable.
For all of these reasons I am in full support of this project and look forward to timely
review process moving forward.
Sincerest regards,
