South Padre Island, TX, Feb. 15, 2018: The City of South Padre Island’s Padre Boulevard
Sidewalk Improvement project started in late May 2017. The project is well underway
and Phases I, II and IV have been completed. Phase III is currently on schedule.
Construction will temporarily pause during March for Spring Break and will resume
again April 2.
Thus far, 30 blocks on both sides of Padre Boulevard have been completed with
sidewalks and brick pavers. Designated areas will be landscaped. The installation of
irrigation is scheduled to begin at the end of February.
“The project is scheduled to minimize negative impacts to businesses during peak
times,” said Willie Higginbotham, right-of-way officer. “We would like to thank the
community for their patience and understanding while we continue to make progress
on this worthwhile project.”
Areas of Padre Boulevard are reduced to one-lane and may congest traffic flowing north
and south. This project consists of six-foot sidewalks with landscaping improvements
and bike lane markings. The project will also include enhancements to pedestrian
crossings.
The four phases of the project are listed below:
● Phase I-Park Road 100 area to Padre Boulevard Loop.
● Phase II-Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway median area.
● Phase III-801 Padre Blvd. to 7355 Padre Blvd.
● Phase IV-Padre Boulevard loop area.
