‘It’s a beautiful time.’
By , Hill Country Reporter
The biggest holiday of the season is behind us, and many are already planning ahead for the fall and winter. As it is Christmas in July, many travelers are already looking into a coastal Christmas in South Texas this December.
A Wisconsin woman asked locals in a Facebook group for some insight on Christmas on South Padre Island. She wrote, “Be honest – is Christmas week a decent time to visit here, or should it be avoided?”
Many users quickly responded to the prompt with personal testaments to life by the coast and the tranquility that comes outside of the normal tourist season. Several of the users gave recommendations for both the holiday season and its year-round attractions.
“It’s a beautiful time. The beginning of December is the Boat parade, and then the Christmas parade on Padre Blvd. The island is less busy but the weather is wonderful,” wrote Amy-Noelle Gallo.
“Good time in my opinion. Water is pretty cold, but the beach is beautiful, and there are many things here and surrounding areas to keep you busy,” Laurie Levermann Coker said.
South Padre Island is home to several resorts and attractions for people of all ages, such as its amusement park, sandcastle museum, arcades, plenty of resorts, and on-land outdoor activities like horseback riding. One user added, “You could [also] take a short drive to Brownsville and visit Holiday Village located by Gladys Porter Zoo.”
While most supported the notion of celebrating Christmas with sand between your toes, several warned the traveler of a possible weather shift.
“Unpredictable. One Christmas it was over 90 degrees. Another Christmas it actually snowed on SPI,” Karen Copenhaver Pattillo.
“Perfect time! Only drawback, no one can predict the weather. Typically absolutely beautiful, but can go south (north?) quickly,” Les Elkins shared.
“I have been here 10 years and I swam in the pool on 8 [ of those Christmas’.] It’s not real crowded either. But once in a while we will get a cold Xmas but it clears up a day or two later,” Cheryl Lovinus.
The consensus of the discussion was that you SHOULD visit South Padre Island during the Christmas holiday season, but everyone emphasized the importance of doing research, even if we are about six months away.
