The City of South Padre Island (SPI) selected current firefighter Marcus Smith to fill the Fire Chief position following Fire Chief Burney Baskett’s last day with the City on June 28.
Smith served the City of Lancaster, Texas from 1984 to 2013 and retired from the Lancaster Fire Department as a Captain prior to accepting a position with SPI. He also served his hometown of Wilmer, Texas as its Fire Chief from 2005 to 2012 to help his community as his schedule would allow. Smith has an advanced firefighter certification, is a licensed paramedic and is an emergency medical service instructor.
His 37 years of experience include ten years as a volunteer and 28 years as a career firefighter. Smith joined the SPI Fire Department on March 1, 2013 and will serve as Fire Chief starting June 29, 2013.
