Mayor Bob Pinkerton gave the annual State of the Island Annual Report. He reviewed the last fiscal year’s accomplishments and propose the vision and direction for the coming year. He thanked City Council and all Boards, Committees, Commissions, Task Force, and City Employees.
SPI was presented the Scenic City Certification Program Silver Award
Mayor Pinkerton appointed Barry Patel to the Cameron County Appraisal District.
Courtney Hayden reported that things still are looking good for the next legislative session in Austin for TWIA for state to come to possible agreement that all of the state counties help with Catastrophic Insurance and not just 14 Coastal Counties.
Broaddus and Associates presented plans for the Convention Centre Expansion. Broaddus and Associates were given $48,000 first Council Meeting in October to begin Phase 1 of the project which encompasses the strategic plan, concept review, procurement, finance schedule and short term remedies to minimize the downtime are being drafted. The plan calls for the Convention Centre to expand from 76,000 square feet to 148,000 square feet at a total cost of $30 Million.
Council approved the creation of a transition board (Sam Listi, Bob Fudge, Bob Pinkerton, Paul Cunningham and Lacey Ekberg) for the Convention and Visitor’s Authority not to exceed 5 members.
Merchants Resource Group presented their plan for programmable modules in the form of touch screen Kiosks that would enact paid parking system for beaches on Gulf Blvd. and Beach cul-de-sacs. Council advised that more information from the General Land Office is needed to move forward with this project.
Council approved the first Reading of the Ordinance 12-15 adopting the service plan and annexation of five tracts of the SPI EYJ near Isla Blanca Park and beach up to Surf Circle.
There was a first reading of an Ordinance 12-16 concerning the collection of bulky items and brush. Bulky items are now allowed to be on property for pick up on or after 25th day of the month for pick up on the first business day of the month.
