BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A new airline company, called Aerus, is coming to the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport to shuttle passengers between here and the industrial city of Monterrey, capital of the Mexican state of Nuevo León.
The announcement was made Monday, June 24, during a brief presentation at the airport.
It’s set to begin servicing the two cities by July 8 flying in and out in a plane equipped to take nine passengers at a time.
Airport Director Angel Ramos said the airline runs a modern type of executive/corporate aircraft fleet that services more than 20 cities in Mexico.
“However,” he said, “Brownsville is their first international destination.”
He said it’s a great deal for the airport and for the people of Brownsville and Monterrey.
Mayor John Cowen said the announcement was the result of ongoing negotiations, adding it takes time to make a deal like this happen.
“It’s very important to have direct flights connecting the two cities,” he said. “This will be the fourth airline servicing this airport.”

Judith Arrieta Munguia, the Mexican consul in Brownsville, welcomed the airline.
“Congratulations for this great announcement,” she said. “We, at the consulate, are content to have a new route to connect us.”
She said people from Nuevo León State, known as regiomontanos, have many ties with this part of South Texas.
In fact, much of the credit for developing South Padre Island is attributed to the regiomontanos.
And because of that, the Island is often referred to as Little Monterey.
Javier Herrera, CEO with Aerus, said his company is very happy to be launching the new service here.
He said the airline will make daily trips and it’s tentatively planning to make the first flight this July 8.
Aerus goes by the legal name of Aerotransportes Rafilher S.A. de C.V., and it’s a Mexican regional carrier founded in 2022.
