Plans for a new, multi-million dollar medical facility at moving forward at South Padre Island.
The southeast corner of Mesquite Street and south Padre Boulevard will soon be the home of the brand new hospital facility, “SPI Medical Center.”
“A hospital is needed. A hospital is a very specific need at a very specific time,” SPI Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Richard Joe Ybarra said.
Ybarra says the two-story, 27,000-square foot facility will feature 10 patient beds, an emergency room and a helicopter pad area.
Wilkinson Capital Partners is the property development company behind the $41 million micro-hospital project.
“It will have a full imagining center, x-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CTE, we will have a variety of specialties such as primary care, specialty positions such as surgeons, mid-level nurses,” Wilkinson Capital Partners Real Estate Manager Brad Foster said.
The new facility and medical staff will reduce patient emergency travel time to hospitals in nearby cities by up to an hour
Construction on the new SPI Medical Center will start sometime between July and September and is expected to take up to 15 months to complete.
