A full house showed up on Thursday at the monthly Coffee and Conversation at Café Kranzler to get the most recent updates on space travel in the Rio Grande Valley. Lizzy de la Garza with the Brownsville EDC provided not only an overview of the SpaceX program, but discussed the numerous economic benefits our area would receive if Elon Musk and his group decide Brownsville and Boca Chica Beach are the best place for their launch pad.
It is estimated that approximately 10,000 people would view the monthly launches. This translates into dollars. The project would also provide 600 jobs to the area. 200 of these would come from outside the area, but 400 would come from our area, and the lowest salary to be paid will be $55,000. Think how many of our sons and daughters would finally have the opportunity to stay in the valley following graduation from college and obtain high tech jobs with good salaries. Again, this is dollar value for us!
Garza stated the environmental study has been completed, but the results have not been released. It is anticipated the results will be known by the end of March. Garza noted that once the results are announced a Public Hearing will be scheduled to allow the public to express their support, either way, of the project, and get answers to any questions they may have.
