“Pachanga in the Park” has evolved into a celebration of the rich
culinary history and culture of Port Isabel which represents its
unique bi-cultural and maritime past. Dozens of vendors prepare a wide
variety of foods from recipes handed down and perfected from
generation to generation. Vendors are asked to present their unique
interpretations of Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican dishes from local
favorites to influences from several Mexican states including Durango,
Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas and Coahuila. Delicious and authentic dishes
such as caldillo, mole, menudo, tortas, abongidas and other
specialties made with ingredients from Mexico have found their way to
Port Isabel over generations and have come to represent the culinary
culture that is uniquely Port Isabel. Tex-Mex, certainly a south Texas
staple also represents the local taste of Port Isabel. The Pachanga
offers a selection of fajita preparations and other beef, chicken and
shrimp dishes, tacos and chalupas to serve up the Tex-Mex experience.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Chulupa contest. Port
Isabel vendors participate in creating the most unique, most
authentic, flavorful and visually appealing dish. This contest is
taken seriously and held to a strict standard of individuality giving
the foodie festival-goer an opportunity to try an array of
specialties.
In addition, there will be a traditional Mexican Costume Contest, a
Grito Contest, a Dance Contest and a Jalapeno Eating Contest. Music
will be provided by DJ Jeffery Martinez followed by a live performance
of Port Isabel’s own “Los Dominantes”, a crowd favorite. Also
presented are an array of games and activities for children of all
ages including train rides, slides and a Ferris wheel. Food, vendor’s
products and kiddie rides are all priced as posted.
“Pachanga in the Park” is a free admission, family friendly event
sponsored by the City of Port Isabel and the Port Isabel Economic
Development Corporation.
