We attended a meeting this past week at City Hall in South Padre Island that was about a study done for the Texas General Land Office (GLO) concerning erosion and development of property north of The Shores.
They reported that there are some areas of the North beach on South Padre Island that erode as much as 12′ a year. That is not true in town where the beaches are more stable.
You must realize that South Padre Island has something really special here. There is nowhere in the U.S. that has this many miles of undeveloped sand beaches according to the GLO. If developed properly, it can be amazing.
Right now, Cameron County has jurisdiction for the north beaches but South Padre Island is considering annexing it. This will be interesting to watch. We have all heard people say that this will not happen in our lifetime but they might be wrong.
